What Is QNS Physical Security for Schools?
QNS designs, installs, and maintains physical security systems for K-12 school districts: high-definition IP security cameras, door access control, and visitor management, all tied into the district network and supported long after installation. Our own engineers and regional technicians handle the work from the first walkthrough to ongoing maintenance, so there is one accountable team instead of a chain of subcontractors. QNS has worked exclusively with school districts since 1997 and supports more than 200 districts.
Physical security in a school is a network project as much as a building project. Cameras, door controllers, and visitor kiosks all run on the district network, share its switches and power, and depend on the same people to keep them working. Districts get the best results when the team that runs the network also designs the security systems that live on it.

Why Districts Choose QNS for K-12 Physical Security
In-House Design and Installation
Our own engineers design the system and our own technicians install it. No hand-offs between an integrator, an electrician, and an IT vendor who each own a piece.
Built on the Network You Already Have
Cameras and door controllers are planned around your switches, PoE capacity, bandwidth, and segmentation, so new security does not slow down instruction or open a gap in the network.
Regional Technicians Who Know Your Buildings
More than 100 technicians based regionally, with a 96 percent same-day resolution rate, so a failed camera or stuck door gets attention quickly.
Support After Installation
Maintenance, firmware updates, troubleshooting, and system tuning continue after the install, which is where many camera and access projects quietly fall apart.
What We Typically Find in District Buildings
Most districts did not choose their current security setup all at once. It grew one building, one grant, and one vendor at a time, and the gaps sit where those pieces meet.
Camera Blind Spots
Entrances, parking lots, and hallways with no coverage, or coverage too low-resolution to identify anyone.
Mismatched Systems by Building
Different camera brands and recorders in each building, with no single place to view or search footage.
Keys Instead of Credentials
Exterior doors managed with physical keys that cannot be revoked when a badge or key goes missing.
Paper Visitor Logs
Front office sign-in sheets with no screening and no record of who is still in the building.
Security Devices on a Flat Network
Cameras and door controllers on the same network segment as student devices, unpatched and running default passwords.
What QNS Physical Security Includes
Four parts that work together, because cameras without access control, or new hardware without anyone maintaining it, leave the same gaps the district started with.
Security Camera Systems
High-definition IP video surveillance covering entrances, hallways, gyms, bus loops, and parking areas, with centralized viewing across every building and cloud or on-premise retention. We plan camera placement around how your buildings are actually used, size storage to your retention needs, and make sure administrators and, where appropriate, local responders can pull up the right footage quickly.
Door Access Control
Card and fob-based access control for exterior and key interior doors, with schedules that lock and unlock buildings automatically and credentials that can be turned off in seconds when a badge is lost or a staff member leaves. Districts can lock down one building or every building from a single interface, without walking the halls with a key ring.
Visitor Management
Digital check-in that screens visitors, prints dated badges, and keeps a searchable record of who is on campus. The front office gets a faster sign-in process and an accurate list of who is in the building at any moment, which matters most during a drill or a real emergency.
Integration, Monitoring, and Ongoing Support
Cameras, door access, and visitor management connected to each other and to the district network, segmented away from student traffic, and monitored for device health. Once the system is in, QNS continues to maintain it: replacing failed hardware, applying firmware updates, adjusting schedules, and adding coverage as buildings change.
Physical Security as Part of a Wider Security Plan
Cameras and locked doors protect buildings, but most of the systems behind them are network devices. A camera running outdated firmware or a door controller reachable from the student network is a cybersecurity problem as well as a physical one.
That is why QNS plans physical security alongside network security and cybersecurity rather than as a separate project. We will tell you what your district actually needs, not the largest package we can assemble. For the full picture, see our K-12 Security Services and K-12 IT Services.
Supporting Physical Security Services
QNS also handles the groundwork that decides whether a physical security project succeeds. Our supporting physical security services for K-12 districts include the following...
Site Surveys and System Design
Building-by-building walkthroughs to map coverage, door hardware, cabling paths, and network capacity before any equipment is quoted.
Cabling, Switching, and PoE Upgrades
Structured cabling and PoE switch capacity sized for cameras and door controllers, installed by the same team that maintains your network.
Network Segmentation for Security Devices
Cameras, door controllers, and building systems placed on their own network segments so a compromised device cannot reach staff or student systems.
Funding and Budget Planning
Phased rollouts and guidance on school safety grants and other funding sources, so projects fit the district budget cycle.
Planning Physical Security Around District Budgets
Physical security projects rarely happen all at once. Most districts upgrade cameras, doors, and visitor systems in phases, often timed around safety grants, bond cycles, or summer break when buildings are empty and installation does not disrupt classes.
QNS designs the first phase so later phases connect to it cleanly, and helps districts line projects up with the funding available to them. If your district has a grant deadline or a summer install window coming up, that is a good time to start the conversation.

What the Free Physical Security Assessment Covers
Every assessment includes a walkthrough of your buildings and ends with a written report you can share with your superintendent or board.
Camera Coverage
Where coverage is missing, outdated, or too low-resolution to be useful.
Entry Points and Door Hardware
Which doors are secured, which rely on keys, and where access control would help most.
Visitor Process
How visitors are screened and tracked today, and where the front office has gaps.
Network Readiness
Whether switches, cabling, and PoE capacity can support new or expanded security devices.
Device Security
Firmware, passwords, and network placement of the cameras and door controllers you already have.

Common Questions About K-12 Physical Security
Can you work with the cameras and door hardware we already have?
Often, yes. We start by reviewing what is in place and keep equipment that is still supported and performing. Where older systems cannot be integrated or secured, we explain why and plan a phased replacement rather than a full rip-and-replace.
Do you install the systems yourselves or use subcontractors?
QNS designs and installs physical security in-house with our own engineers and regional technicians. The same team that installs the system supports it afterward.
Where is camera footage stored, and for how long?
Districts can choose cloud, on-premise, or a mix. We size storage to the retention period your district sets and make sure footage is easy for authorized staff to find and export.
Will cameras and door controllers slow down our network?
Not when they are planned properly. We account for bandwidth, PoE capacity, and segmentation during design, so security devices run on their own segments without competing with classroom traffic.
Can we roll this out one building at a time?
Yes. Many districts start with entrances and the buildings with the greatest need, then expand as budget allows. We design the first phase so later phases connect to it cleanly.
What happens after installation?
QNS stays involved. We handle maintenance, firmware updates, troubleshooting, and changes to door schedules or camera coverage, under fixed-price agreements with no onsite travel fees.

Technology is constantly growing and changing. It is very costly and difficult for a small rural school to stay current and provide resources that afford our students the same reliable networks as students in larger districts. Since QNS first expanded into Missouri, they have provided tremendous support for me as a Superintendent, from network support down to recommending the best equipment and installation. I am thankful for their guidance and knowledge about all things relating to technology. They truly are a partner in education and I couldn't imagine running a district without them.
